AAT Accounting Level 2 Foundation Certificate

The AAT Accounting Qualification will start you on the path to a successful accounting and finance career. Our training will give you the practical skills and financial expertise to follow a rewarding career in professional accountancy.

You will enrol on an AAT course through us and will then you need to register with AAT as a student member.

What do I learn?
Depending on the level you study you will be learning in a classroom environment over one or two evenings a week. You are also expected to practice your learned skills at home or in your place of work.

There are three levels to the AAT Accounting Qualification. You will spend about a year on each level, so if you start at Level 2, it will take you three years to become fully qualified. If you have previous experience, you could have certain exemptions, and qualify in two years or less.

You should spend three hours a week studying outside of class, for each learning and assessment area. Your study time will need to increase before assessments when you’re revising. Don’t forget to use all the study and membership support that is also offered by AAT as well as from the course tutors.
What do I gain?
On successful completion you will gain the AAT Accounting Level 2 Foundation Certificate
What do I need?
You will need:
• an aspiration to achieve
• confidence with numbers
• the ability to complete assessments and written projects in English

Applicants will be invited to attend an interview before being accepted onto the course.
What do I gain?
After you’ve qualified with AAT, you can choose how to build on all the skills and knowledge you’ve gained. The best news is that after your course is finished, AAT will still be there to support you and help develop your career as an accounting and finance professional.

Depending on your career goals, AAT will have the resources and support to help you:
• become an AAT full member (and use the letters MAAT after your name)
• become a chartered accountant
• go to university
• start your own business and become self-employed
What else do I need to know?
You will have to have a thirst for learning and be prepared to work outside your guided lessons. As part of the course you are expected to keep yourself up to date with the latest development in the subject area.

Final assessment is by examination only. There is no course work to complete but you will be assessed in class periodically to establish understanding and learning.

Whole class and group work activities will take place but the majority of your learning will be ‘standalone’.

Verah Achieng – Foundation Degree in Business and Enterprise

When Verah Achieng moved from Germany to the UK in 2014, she had set her mind on improving her career prospects. Fast forward two years, and she is on track to get a qualification that could change her life.
Verah was working at Oxfordshire County Council as specialist customer service adviser for the Social Work team. She was keen to develop a career in charity management when a colleague, who was studying at City of Oxford College, part of Activate Learning, recommended the college to her. ‘The city centre campus is just around the corner from my workplace and it is really convenient. I just popped over one day at lunchbreak. The receptionist was friendly and introduced me to staff in the business department, so I could talk to them about the courses that I was interested in and how they fitted with my plans.’
Verah chose to enrol on to the Foundation Degree in Business and Enterprise, because it would help her gain a qualification to further her career in her chosen field, whilst fitting around her current job commitments: ‘I want to be a manager in a charitable organisation. The Foundation Degree in Business and Enterprise helped me gain an understanding of how businesses are formed and run, expanding my knowledge of leadership styles and of the context beyond the operational figures. This programme equipped me really well for my future career, especially in terms of leadership skills, creativity skills and skills auditing, learning to identifying your own skills, and how best to put all these in use. And because it’s a higher education programme, I also benefitted from a range of facilities available at Oxford Brookes University, such as the library.’
Vera is set to get her qualification in 2017 and has exciting plans to develop her future career in the field of international non-profit management: ‘I want to work for an organisation such as Oxfam, managing the delivery of aid programmes in the field. Further down the line, I want to run my own business.’
‘Studying at City of Oxford College has given me more experience and knowledge to help turn my dreams into a reality. I would say to anyone thinking about studying for a qualification to go for it, as long as they can make it fit with their commitments. It is a great opportunity to build yourself and invest in your future.’
