History of the college

Activate Learning was launched in 2013, but our roots go back much further than that.

Our history providing further education opportunities goes back to 1955. The college has changed names and merged with other education providers as it grew and developed, offering an ever expanding range of exciting new programmes.

1960 – Oxford College of Further Education founded at the current Blackbird and Leys and City Centre campuses

2003 – Oxford & Cherwell College launches when Oxford College of Further Education, North Oxfordshire College in Banbury and Rycotewood College merge

2005 – Opening of a new campus in Bicester coincides with a name change to Oxford & Cherwell Valley College

2010 – Reading College joins the Oxford & Cherwell Valley College Group

June 2013 – Rocket Consultancy becomes part of Oxford & Cherwell Valley College Group

August 2013 – OCVC is re-launched as Activate Learning

September 2013 – UTC Reading, a new University Technical College for 14 to 19-year-olds specialising in computer science and engineering, opens. Activate Learning is the lead sponsor

November 2013 – Former OCVC campuses are re-launched as Banbury and Bicester College and City of Oxford College

December 2013  - The college group is rated as Good with Outstanding features by Ofsted.

And our growth isn’t stopping there! September 2015 will see the opening of UTC Oxfordshire, a new University Technical College in Didcot. This will specialise in science and engineering. Activate Learning is the lead sponsor.

We work together giving you the chance to change your life for the better. You can become a new part of our successful history.
