Introduction to Traditional Upholstery

Upholster your own stool to take home!

We are delighted to be able to re-run this successful, 10 week Introduction to Traditional Upholstery course. This introduction to upholstery is for absolute beginners and will teach traditional craft techniques.

You will learn how to build a hand-stitched and stuffed stool. A frame will be supplied by City of Oxford College. You will use age old methods of construction and classic materials such as coir and animal hair will be used to upholster the stool.

If you catch the bug and find that you would like to learn more then you will be able to book onto the longer and more comprehensive creative, traditional upholstery course beginning in Jan 2018 which will run 1 day a week, over the course of a year.

What do I learn?
Throughout the process of building your stool we will cover the following topics (demonstrations of techniques and handouts will be also given):
•Introduction to tools, materials, fire safety regulations.
•Wood finishes.
•Understanding traditional methods of construction, techniques and materials.
•Using upholstery specific hand tools such as hammers, regulators and bayonet needles.
•Sewing a hand build stitched edge in the traditional manner.
•Choosing upholstery fabrics.

What do I need?
All materials needed and frames are included in the price (except top fabric) and no tools are required as they will be provided during the evenings.

This course will run on 10 Thursday evenings from 6.30pm- 9pm.

Please note that this course will NOT run during half term.

Teaching will take place in our upholstery workshop by professional, award winning upholsterer Rachael Stevenson.
