Introduction to Woodwork Skills

This course is run in 5-week sessions throughout the academic year on Tuesday evenings between 6.30 and 9pm. It’s for people with little or no experience in woodwork.

Please note that this course does not run during the half term/end of term breaks.

What do I learn?
Students can join at the beginning of any 5-week session. In each block of teaching you gain distinct skills and make progress towards a viable outcome.

This includes assistance in the use and care of hand tools, and learning techniques in the construction of joints in wood. Attendance at more than one session provides an opportunity to experience a broader range of skills and produce a more complex outcome.
What do I gain?
You learn the basic woodworking skills and gradually build up practical knowledge and confidence through workshop practice.
What do I need?
This course is aimed at students with little or no experience in furniture making; students with more experience of furniture making may prefer to attend the Thursday class: Developing Woodwork Skills.
What can I do next?
Re-enrol for further terms of this course to gain more experience, or you might want to progress to the Developing Woodwork Skills course to develop your skills further.
What else do I need to know?
The course takes place in fully-equipped workshops in the Rycotewood Furniture Centre, basic materials are provided but more complex projects may incur an additional charge.
