Principles and Practice of Furniture Making Level 1 City and Guilds Certificate

Learn how to make things by hand with the Level 1 City & Guilds Certificate in the Principles and Practice of Furniture Making.

It’s an introductory course which helps you to learn a vocational area: woodwork. By training at City of Oxford College’s renowned Rycotewood Furniture Centre you learn the principles of handcrafted furniture from industry-trained tutors.

What do I learn?
The course introduces you to the hand techniques of furniture making. It is taught at the beginning of a Level 2 furniture making course for full-time students and is not available as a stand-alone course. This includes timber technology, joint making, basic veneering and the techniques of producing small items of furniture.

You complete a practical assignment produce a portfolio of knowledge and are -you will be continuously assessed by practical exercises and written work. You take a health and safety one hour multiple-choice exam.

The majority of this course is taught in the workshop by practical activities and tutor demonstrations. There are some lectures on materials and tools used in furniture making and health and safety.
What do I gain?
You develop your practical skills and gain a greater understanding of the bespoke furniture industry.
What do I need?
There are no entry criteria however a literacy review will be taken where applicable to support initial advice and guidance.
What can I do next?
On completion of the course you could progress to a Level 2 course in furniture making which we run here at City of Oxford College or you can seek employment.
