What do I learn?
You study 18 modules over the two years including:
• principles of anatomy and physiology
• physiology for fitness
• assessing risks
• fitness testing and training exercise
• health and lifestyle
• practical team/individual sport analysis of sport performance
• leadership in sport
• organising sport
• sport as a business
• sports development
• instructing physical activity
• injuries massage
• work experience
Individual learning targets are set each term and you receive regular feedback on your progress in meeting these targets. Formal assessment is through assignments projects presentations and practical assessments which are set at regular intervals throughout the course. The functional skills in English maths or ICT is assessed by an external exam.
Approximately 60% of your time at college is classroom-based with an active approach to the theory subjects. The remainder of the time will be practical activities in the sports hall or gym such as fitness coaching or practical sport. A strong emphasis of the practical sessions is placed on working and learning with others and you are regularly set tasks to complete in partnership with other students. You also need to be able to work independently and take responsibility for your own learning. Throughout the course you have the opportunity to demonstrate your skills by participating in community activities and schools partnerships. You will also have ongoing tutorial support to help you achieve the qualification.
What do I gain?
The qualification awarded is the Edexcel Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science and functional skills qualifications in English maths or ICT. You also gain by improving the wider skills vital for success in further study or employment including self-confidence speaking in front of others working with others taking responsibility and managing your time. By the end of the course you will have benefited from a valuable insight into future careers open to you.
What do I need?
5 or more GCSEs grades A*-C including English and maths
BTEC level 2 Diploma grade Merit or Distinction plus GCSE grade C or above or Functional Skills at level 2 in English and maths

Applicants will be invited to attend an interview and complete an internal assessment. All students will have their literacy and numeracy needs supported within the programme.
What do I gain?
On successful completion of the course you can progress to university in sport-related courses such as coaching sport development and PE teaching. Alternatively you are well placed to find work in the industry. Recent students have gone straight into employment in leisure centres, gyms and as sports coaches.

The fee for international students for the 2016 entrance is £6,300 per year.
